Course Overview
Radiation Source Recovery is designed for personnel responsible for safe working practices using radiation in compliance with local rules and governance documents, such as the Ionising Radiation Regulations 2017.
The course outlines the safe recovery of sources used in X-ray and gamma-ray techniques and other dangerous occurrences that may result from the use of radiation sources within the environment.
Course Objectives
Personnel certified in Radiation Source Recovery will have demonstrated an understanding of advanced radiation safety and source recovery with a high level of confidence to work safely with radiation sources, in compliance with local rules, risk assessments and contingency planning.
Within certification, personnel may be authorised by the employer to:
- Work with source recovery (both X-ray and gamma-ray sources)
- Collaborate with Radiation Protection Advisors (RPA) and Supervisors (RPS)
- Establish boundaries and barriers including signage
- Determine the safety restrictions and risk assessments associated with its application
- Work with and record measurements of radiation in accordance with Governing Documents
- Understand and comply with the employer’s local rules and legislation
- Safety checks on radiation equipment and measurement systems
- Maintain retrieval kits used for source recovery
- Work within safety restrictions and risk assessment guidelines
- Record and document safety checks and boundary measurements
- Complete and endorse safety records
Course Content
This course is flexible and will be tailored to your company’s specific source needs. Below is an overview of the standard course, which includes but is not limited to:
- Local rules and contingency plans
- Build an awareness of relevant biological effects and radiation physics
- Radiation levels, dose limitations and boundary measurements
- Radiation protection and calculations
- Understanding notifications required by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and environmental protection agencies such as the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA)
- Radiographic equipment, calibration and function tests
- Understanding Radiation Compound Facilities and Operating Procedures
- Radiation source storage
- Source retrieval kits
- Transportation requirements and legislation
- Company appointments and responsibilities
- Record keeping in compliance with approved dosimetry service (ADS)
- Ionising Radiation (IR) medical requirements
- Understanding company safety procedures and investigation reporting
- Ionising Radiation Regulations (current edition)
