In-Service Inspection

Commonly used for in-service maintenance inspections on pressure systems, piping, plating, and structures, In-Service Ultrasonic Testing and Inspection (ISI-UT) serves the purpose of detecting and evaluating in-service flaws, degradation mechanisms, anomalies, and thickness measurements in steels.

This course is available on both SNT and PCN Level 2 schemes.

Course Overview

In-Service Ultrasonic Testing and Inspection is particularly effective in inspecting solid materials such as steels to uncover anomalies found through in-service degradation processes. Defects associated with degradation mechanisms include corrosion and/ or erosion.

In-Service Ultrasonic Testing and Inspection utilises high-frequency sound waves (ultrasound) to penetrate into the material being inspected, and then the returning echoes are analysed to reveal information about the internal structure and integrity of the material.

This is a broad course covering the entirety of the upstream and downstream processes and the effects of corrosion and erosion on components. This course is aimed at personnel who are responsible for the detection of anomalies on various in-service components within, but not limited to, the petrochemical, shipping, renewable energy, the power industries.

Course Objectives

Personnel certified in In-Service Ultrasonic Testing and Inspection Level 2 will have demonstrated an understanding of the subject and a level of confidence to perform In-Service Ultrasonic Testing and Inspection in accordance with NDT procedures and industry standards.

Within certification, Level 2 personnel may be authorised and qualified by the employer to:

  • Understand the degradation processes and mechanisms
  • Select the technique required to carry out the test method using compression, angle and shear waves
  • Determine the limitations of each technique
  • Interpret codes, standards and procedures to identify their application
  • Prepare equipment, calibrate, function tests and use of reference test blocks
  • Prepare and endorse written instructions for Ultrasonic Testing
  • Perform the inspection tasks
  • Interpret and evaluate the results of the inspection against inspection criteria
  • Complete and endorse inspection reports and records
  • Supervise all tasks carried out by personnel at Level 1 or Level 2
