Liquid Penetrant Inspection (DPI/PT)

Liquid Penetrant Inspection (LPI), also referred to as Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT), is a commonly used non-destructive testing (NDT) method for the detection of surface-breaking defects in non-porous materials.

This course is available on both SNT and PCN schemes.

Level 2

Course Overview

Liquid Penetrant Inspection is highly effective in examining the integrity of materials such as metals, plastics, ceramics, and glass. It tests for surface defects like cracks, porosity, laps, or other discontinuities can potentially compromise their integrity.

This course aims to provide training for personnel tasked with identifying surface-breaking indications on non-porous materials. Liquid Penetrant Inspection is known for its simplicity and cost-effectiveness as a non-destructive testing (NDT) method, allowing for efficient inspection of large areas and a wide variety of materials.

This technique finds widespread application across industries such as aerospace, manufacturing, automotive, and power generation. It enables the examination of welds, castings, forgings, and other components for surface defects.

Liquid Penetrant Inspection is available in two techniques: fluorescent and colour contrast methods.

Course Objectives

Personnel certified to Liquid Penetrant Inspection Level 2 will have demonstrated an understanding of the subject and a level of confidence to perform Liquid Penetrant  Inspection in accordance with NDT procedures.

Within certification, Level 2 personnel may be authorised and qualified by the employer to:

  • Select the technique required to carry out the test method, visible or fluorescent
  • Determine the limitations of its application
  • Interpret codes, standards and procedures to identify their application
  • Prepare equipment and test blocks used
  • Perform the inspection tasks
  • Interpret and evaluate the results of the inspection
  • Complete and endorse inspection reports and records
  • Supervise all tasks carried out by personnel at Level 1 or Level 2
