Visual Testing (VT)

Many industries use Visual Testing as a method to inspect and evaluate the surface condition and visible features of a component or structure without causing any damage to the material under examination.

We offer this course for SNT/PCN Level 1 and Level 2.

This course is suitable for students with or without VT experience

Level 2

Course Overview

This course has been designed for personnel who need to visually inspect the surface and accessible areas of objects to identify any signs of defects. Defects may include but are not limited to cracks, corrosion, degradation, pitting, warping, discolourations, surface finish problems, or any other visible irregularities.

Visual testing can be performed using the naked eye, but it is often aided by various tools and devices, such as magnifying lenses, borescopes (optical instruments used to inspect hard-to-reach areas), and video cameras.

The advantages of visual testing in non-destructive testing include its simplicity, cost-effectiveness, and immediate results. This makes it a widely accessible method for conducting initial inspections in industries, including petrochemical, aerospace, general power and more.

Course Objectives

Personnel certified to Visual Testing Level 2 will have demonstrated an understanding of the subject and a level of confidence to perform Visual Testing in accordance with NDT procedures.

Within certification, Level 2 personnel may be authorised and qualified by the employer to:

  • Select the technique required to carry out the test method
  • Determine the limitations of its application
  • Interpret codes, standards and procedures to identify their application
  • Prepare equipment and settings
  • Perform the inspection tasks
  • Interpret and evaluate the results of the inspection
  • Complete and endorse inspection reports and records
  • Supervise all tasks carried out by personnel at Level 1 or Level 2
