Positive Material Identification (PMI)

Positive Material Identification (PMI) is a relatively fast NDT method used to analyse the chemical composition of metals and alloys. This method is used in various industries, including but not limited to petrochemical, renewable energy, and general power industries. PMI is employed to verify materials and ensure their adherence to industry standards and specifications.

Course Overview

This familiarisation course covers the principles and fundamentals of PMI using x-ray and fluorescence. The PMI method utilises portable hand-held devices to assist with material evaluations from on-site production and fabrication facilities.

Course Objectives

At the end of this bespoke course, personnel attending will leave with a better understanding of Positive Material Identification (PMI) and the various alloy grade names used in its application. They will be made familiar with x-ray analysis device and the data acquisition used for client reference reports.

This course aims to create a solid foundation for those who work across all industries associated with the material identification requirements of alloys and steels.

Course Content

This course is flexible and will be tailored to your company’s specific needs. Below is an overview of the standard course, which includes but is not limited to:

  • Radiation Safety, Local Rules and Compliance
  • Material’s chemical composition and alloy grades
  • Surface Conditions for Positive Material Identification
  • Terminology and definitions used in PMI
  • Principals and fundamentals of PMI testing on steel and alloy products
  • PMI equipment, techniques and validations
  • PMI test unit calibration and function tests
  • Failure Analysis PMI
  • Understanding regulations, procedures, codes and standards
  • Risk assessments
  • Application of the PMI X-ray Fluorescence Analyser
  • Examination of base metals, alloys, welds, casting and forgings
  • Evaluation of the results against acceptance standards
  • Reporting requirements
  • Product technology covering material properties

The course outcomes are achieved by an end-of-course assessment.
