Radiation Safety Awareness (RSA/RAD Assist) – Annual Surveillance
Radiation Safety Awareness (RSA) gives you an overview of a Company’s safety requirements associated with the use of x-ray and/ or gamma-ray sources within workplace environments.
This course only applies to whose who have completed the 2 Day Initial Radiation Safety Awareness (RSA/RAD Assist) course.

Course Overview
This bespoke course is designed for those personnel working within radiography or in an environment where radiation is present. It has been created for those personnel with limited or no knowledge of radiation safety and applicable regulations.
PLEASE NOTE:
Personnel involved in Radiation Source Recovery (SR) are required to complete an Radiation Safety Awareness course before enrolling in the SR course. More information on our SR course can be found here.
Course Objectives
Personnel certificated in Radiation Safety Awareness will have demonstrated an understanding of basic radiation safety with a level of confidence to work safely with radiation sources, in compliance with local rules and governance.
Within certification, personnel are required to understand:
- The working practices associated with X-ray and/or gamma-ray sources
- Boundaries and barriers including signage
- The radiation levels stated in relevant Governing Documents
- Safety restrictions and risk assessments associated with its application
- Compliance with employer’s local rules and legislation
- Safety checks on equipment
- Inspection guidelines
- Record keeping in relation to safety checks and boundary measurements
- Dose limitations and personal dosimetry
Course Content
This course is flexible and will be tailored to your company’s specific needs. Below is an overview of the standard course, which includes but is not limited to:
- Understanding radiation physics
- Looking at biological effects
- Radiation units and dose limitations
- Radiation protection and calculations
- Radiographic equipment, calibration and function tests
- Radiation detection and measurement
- Radiation source storage/compound facilities
- Transportation requirements and legislation
- Company appointments and responsibilities
- Local rules and contingency plans
- Personal dosimetry
- Understanding procedures, codes and standards
- Ionising Radiation Regulations (current edition)

This course is mandatory for companies working within or associated with radiation in their working environments. This is in compliance with the latest Ionising Radiation Regulations (IRR).
