Course Overview
We have designed the Radiation Protection Supervisor course to educate personnel who are responsible for work activities associated with radiation sources or in an environment where radiation is present. This course is specifically for individuals nominated by their company to act as the Radiation Protection Supervisor. The company must designate this person or persons before carrying out any activities associated with radiation.
Course Objectives
Personnel completing this Radiation Protection Supervisor (RPS) course will have demonstrated an understanding of radiation safety with a level of confidence to work safely and supervise other personnel who are working with, or associated with, radiation sources in compliance with local rules and governance.
Personnel may be authorised by the employer to:
- Work with X-ray and gamma-ray sources
- Establish boundaries and barriers including signage
- Work within and record the radiation levels stated in relevant Governing Documents
- Determine the safety restrictions and risk assessments associated with its application
- Understand and comply with employer’s local rules and legislation
- Safety checks on equipment
- Work within inspection guidelines
- Record and document safety checks and boundary measurements
- Complete and endorse safety records
- Set up work plans for use by other personnel
- Understanding investigation procedures for dangerous occurrences
- Work closely with Radiation Protection Advisors (RPAs) and governing bodies such as Health and Safety Executive (HSE)
- Supervise all tasks carried out by other radiation personnel
Course Content

- The role of the RPS and their relationship with an RPA
- Emergency procedures, local rules and contingency plans
- Understanding radiation physics and biological effects
- Radiation units and dose limitations
- Radiation protection, monitoring and calculations
- Radiographic equipment, calibration and function tests
- Radiation present in air, detection and measurement
- Radiation source storage/compound facilities
- Transportation requirements and legislation
- Company appointments, duties and responsibilities
- Personal dosimetry
- Monitoring devices
- Understanding company procedures, normative documents and legislative, and the Radioactive Substances Act
- Ionising Radiation Regulations (current edition)
