Ultrasonic Testing (UT) – Thickness/Wrought
NDT practitioners widely use Ultrasonic Testing and Inspection (UT) as a method during the manufacture, processing, and in-service stages to detect and evaluate flaws, defects, and thickness measurements in solid materials. This course specifically focuses on the UT of wrought products.
This course is available on both SNT and PCN schemes.
Please note: The PCN scope of qualification gained for this course will be in accordance with BS EN ISO 20807 Inspection of Wrought Plate. This course does not comply with BS EN ISO 9712.
Level 2
Course Overview
Ultrasonic Testing and Inspection effectively inspect solid materials like steel, detecting defects including laminations, inclusions, or loss of material thickness. Specifically, this method looks at wrought material with flat or curved surfaces.
It employs high-frequency sound waves (ultrasound) to penetrate the inspected material. Analysts then use the returning echoes to reveal information about the internal structure and integrity of the material.
This course is aimed at personnel who are responsible for the detection of flaws within wrought products. It covers Ultrasonic Testing and Inspection within, but not limited to, the petrochemical, shipping, renewable energy, the power industries.
Course Objectives
Personnel certified to Ultrasonic Testing and Inspection of Wrought Materials Level 2 will have demonstrated an understanding of the subject and a level of confidence to perform Ultrasonic Testing and Inspection in accordance with NDT procedures.
Within certification, Level 2 personnel may be authorised and qualified by the employer to:
- Select the technique required to carry out the test method using compression waves or shear waves for in-service flaws
- Determine the limitations of each technique
- Interpret codes, standards and procedures to identify their application
- Prepare equipment, calibrate, function tests and use of reference test blocks
- Prepare and endorse written instructions for Ultrasonic Testing of Wrought products
- Perform the inspection tasks
- Interpret and evaluate the results of the inspection against inspection criteria
- Complete and endorse inspection reports and records
- Supervise all tasks carried out by personnel at Level 1 or Level 2
